Refik Anadol

Artist Refik Anadol is exploring new data painting series using GAN and optical flow algorithms. This one trained with ~50k image data collection of modern architecture.



Interconnected is a digital artwork that dramatically portrays the hidden troves of operational data at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) as an ever-changing suite of abstract form, color, and simulated texture. The data feeds that drive the artwork include global and regional air-traffic tracking software, airline flight information (arrivals/departures), baggage handling systems, and parking and ground shuttle transportation throughout the airport campus.

In ‘Virtual Depictions:San Francisco’, Refik Anadol’s 40×70′ installation combines real time Twitter data and City of San Francisco public datasets to tell the story of the city from the lobby of the Salesforce headquarters.


Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri

Peter Sellars and Refik Anadol collaborate on a production of Schumann’s Das Paradies at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The music takes inspiration from the poem Lalla-Rookh composed in 1843 by Thomas Moore. To interpret the poem, Anadol created “Peri” as a “tear from heaven” sculpted by machine intelligence. It listened and interacted with the LA Phil and LA Master Chorale throughout the performance, conversing through changes in form and color in reaction to scenes.



ConvergenceLA is a media installation by Susan Narduli and Refik Anadol on the façade of the Metropolis Towers in downtown Los Angeles. This ever-changing cinematic narrative of Los Angeles harnesses demographic, astronomical, oceanographic, tectonic, traffic and climate data streams, social media posts and news feeds, and frames them within fragments of cultural and historical content of Downtown Los Angeles. It receives real time data from eight individual publicly available APIs and processes 4 million points of data per hour.


Archive Dreaming

Commissioned to work with SALT Research collections, artist Refik Anadol employed machine learning algorithms to search and sort relations among 1,700,000 documents. Interactions of the multidimensional data found in the archives are, in turn, translated into an immersive media installation. Archive Dreaming, which is presented as part of The Uses of Art: Final Exhibition with the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union, is user-driven; however, when idle, the installation “dreams” of unexpected correlations among documents. The resulting high-dimensional data and interactions are translated into an architectural immersive space.


Wind of Boston

By using a one-year data set collected from Boston Logan Airport, Refik Anadol Studios developed a series of custom software to read, analyze and visualize wind speed, direction, and gust patterns along with time and temperature at 20-second intervals throughout the year.


Rain Machine

Refik Anadol used a 3,000 square foot exhibition space to immerse visitors in a computer generated rain maze that modernizes Andy Warhol’s 1969 “Rain Machine”.


Visions of America

The dynamic visual program created by Refik Anadol uses custom-built algorithmic sound analysis to listen and respond to the music in real time, using architecture as a canvas and light as a material. Additionally, the movements of Salonen, as he conducts, will be captured by next generation Microsoft Kinect hardware and 3-D depth camera analysis to inform the visuals displayed.



Artist Susan Narduli integrated four 20 foot high LED panels into the second story façade of buildings that front a public plaza in Old Town Pasadena. These panels engage the viewer in contemplating the different ways we understand our world within the context of time, experience and culture.



Narduli Studio designed the three-story, 43-foot high media screen that depicts the slow labor of basketmaking at the hands of a master weaver. Weaving juxtaposes the memory of the site’s history with its current use as a busy university campus. The 5600 hour video runs continuously, night and day, from the start of fall term through graduation.
